What is Smartlook?

Smartlook is an analytics solution tool for websites, iOS/Android apps, and various app frameworks, that answers the "whys" behind users' actions. It helps users understand precisely how customers interact with website and app — watch recordings, create heatmaps, use automatic tracked events, and build conversion funnels. Data is seen on one central dashboard, which enables sharing and collaborating with colleagues. This is to support clear, data-driven decision-making for product managers, marketers, UX designers and developers, and help them improve each website and app by reducing churn rates, boosting conversions, identifying and fixing bugs, and improving UX.

Smartlook offers the ability to record users’ behavior in Unity games. The vendor states clients include Madfinger Games, MobilityWare, and Awesome Prototype.

Smartlook started in 2016 and currently boasts more than 2,800 paying organizations across the globe including companies like Paxful, Sky, Volvo, Vogue, Papa Johns, Miele, and Livestorm.

We use it to watch the recordings and get insights into users' behavior. We also use it to match the user's GCLIDs with our CRM system and look into what they did before sending a form.
  • Recordings of users navigation.
  • Heat maps of website consumption.
  • Creating funnels.
  • I would like an option to watch the recordings in a popup window or a panel within the same screen.
  • We miss the option of creating folders or tagging the recordings.
It would be very useful to discover how the UX of a website impacts the navigation and also to have insights to improve the website's elements' positioning.

Smartlook allows our company to see how our website's front end is being used. It helps us address unknown issues with our website. Smart looks ease of use allows us to filter errors/rage clicks. It's simple to use for even novice users who have no background experience as Smartlook lays everything out for new users.
  • User session recordings.
  • Filters data (IP/Rage Clicks/Specific URLs/Users/etc.).
  • Almost real-time recording sessions.
  • User session recordings could load faster (real-time would be great).
  • Heat maps should be available upon submitting a specific URL. We've had one that's been stuck on "generating/loading" for months. Not sure what happened.
Well Suited:
Client complains that site is not working correctly and you attempt to walk them through a process and client ensures there is an issue with your site. You investigate issue and find the client was indeed on the wrong page and it was user error.

We use Smartlook on our own website and across our client's websites to monitor their user's browsing trends and allow us to identify any bottlenecks and room for improvement in conversion rate. The software is used primarily in our marketing team, but the developers often join in with analysis meetings to discuss and implement solutions.
  • Heat mapping.
  • Screen recording.
  • Conversion recording (form fills).
  • One shortcoming (made worse by GDPR) is that of data sharing to other tracking software.
It's well suited to large and medium/large businesses who have invested in some time and resources to analyse their website user behavior properly. Like many analytics tools, the information is quite in-depth and many smaller companies do not have the time to inspect it properly and/or to understand and implement the required changes to their website.

It is being used by the marketing team in order to demonstrate ROI when deploying new collateral across the website and measuring how old collateral is performing across the website. The whole organization uses this information to decide what we need to improve and areas that are performing well. It's invaluable when determining what prospects are doing on our site and what information they are consuming.
  • Journey mapping.
  • Prospect insights.
  • Conversion rate optimization.
  • I think single customer journeys need more work.
  • Prospect logging and filtering.
  • Folders to decide where prospects can go.
  • Filters to weed out bots.
Ecommerce sites or lead generation sites will benefit from Smartlook, but that's not the only place where you can use them. If you want to test a new website design or just get a glimpse into what people are doing on your site, this is a perfect tool [that] isn't expensive.

Smartlook is currently being used to evaluate and test the design and functionality of our website. It helps us test and identify what features are working or not.
  • Recordings are pretty easy to view and use.
  • Smartlook's website is pretty simple and intuitive.
  • User management on Smartlook's website works well.
  • Heat maps can use some improvement.
Smartlook does a great job of evaluating the U/X. However, it's best to use this tool to complement other tools. For example, Smartlook itself can't explain why your bounce rate is high.

We have been using Smartlook from the very beginning. It helps us to analyze the website by how customers are engaging with it and helps us to make better decisions in terms of marketing. They offer a lot of features which help us to analyze the website performance even the recording is so clear and they will tell us how and where the user is going and their behavior, and it helps us to make our product better.
  • Recording.
  • Funnel creation.
  • Heatmaps.
  • Sources combination.
  • GA 4 support.
  • Apps recording should be easy setup.
As a marketing agency, this can help us to determine the use of behavior, to use a flow, and it helps us to optimize the website for better conversion. We can take the conversion rate from 0.40 to 1.40 with the help of this tool.

We use SmartLook to see how people are interacting on our website to make sure that the content and layout are user-friendly. If it's not then we can change it. If it is then we leave it. Without Smartlook we would not be able to do this.
  • Record.
  • Ability to narrow down search criteria.
  • User friendly.
  • Heat maps.
  • Being able to delete the recording when viewed.
We use it to monitor traffic to our website. We need to know what countries our users come from and what our users are looking at. We need to make sure everything is where it needs to be. With the recording function, we can achieve this with Smartlook.

We use Smartlook to understand how users use our mobile apps. I believe it is a very useful tool to analyze the user journey, find problems, or issues that users are facing and improve the overall user experience. In our company, Smartlook is used by people from different departments to have insights on different parts of our products.
  • Recording users' sessions.
  • Filter recording based on user segmentation or events.
  • Easy integration
  • Sometimes the dashboard could be easier to understand.
  • User heat maps are not so easy to use for unity apps.
I believe it is perfect to easily record user sessions and analyze user's behaviors by filtering sessions by the user's actions or audience segmentation.

It's being used to track and evaluate user behavior on a website. The hope is to collect and analyze the data to see where the gaps, trouble spots and positives are on the website in order to help fulfill marketing and agency goals. It is being used by one person and then presented to a team.
  • Recordings are very thorough.
  • Heat maps are especially useful.
  • The scrolling overview is useful.
  • Funnels were a little difficult to understand.
  • Events were OK.
It is well suited for anyone that is involved or in charge of website activity and performance. Having this option is a useful tool to see what people are clicking on, which can help understand if users are finding what they are searching for. Or, they help reveal what is popular on a website.

I use Smartlook with all of my clients' websites to help inform our digital marketing planning and progress toward goals. A common issue we use Smartlook to address is how to increase on-page conversions. We use the heat map tool and recorded user stories to see how users are interacting with the site to improve conversion navigation.
  • Heat mapping.
  • User story logging (videos of what users are doing on-page).
  • Very small learning curve on set-up and use.
  • Easily integrates with Google Tag Manager.
  • Certain sites seem to block the heat mapping tool—especially around clicks.
  • Data Studio integration for heat maps.
  • It would be great if the heat map could index the entire site instead of entering each page one-by-one.
We use Smartlook primarily with customers who are interested in increasing on-page conversions and/or improving navigations toward certain goals. This is especially useful for our e-commerce customers. When we onboard new customers, it's also a great tool that goes above and beyond the traditional analytics most firms use - it helps set us apart.

Smarklook is being used by the marketing department only and we are using it to create heat maps so we can have a better understanding of our website"s user behaviors. Besides that, the tracking function is quite helpful as well. Being able to see how the users actually interact with our websites helps the marketing team develop the website into the next level.
  • Heatmap function
  • User behavior tracking
  • Pricing is customizable and reasonable
  • Should have connected with google analytic
  • Should be able to tell the reference difference (like youtube ads and search ads)
  • The free trial should seriously have more monthly session
There are times that I am confused with google analytic's bonce rate since it counts as a bounce if the users aren't interacting with multiple pages. Smartlook is extremely helpful in terms of checking users' behavior who has only 1-page interaction. As an analytic assistant tool, Smartlook works essentially well when you use it along with Google Analytics.

We use Smartlook for creating webpage heatmaps and recording visitor journey, in order to observe user behavior and increase conversion across the site.
  • Able to create new heat-maps on the free plan.
  • Nice interface.
  • Great filtering.
  • When creating visitor records, I want to be able to create filters so I can selectively record/not record certain range of users.
Smartlook is great for recording user journeys and gathering insights on your website.

Smartlook is used mainly to see how website visitors interact with our website. Our marketing department mainly uses it, but the information is shared across the company. It has helped us address website issues such as realizing visitors think something is a button when it really isn't. The information it has provided us has been valuable and helpful for our marketing.
  • Heat Maps - It gives you a better idea of where you're customers are looking on your website.
  • Visitor Recordings - It gives us an idea of what the flow is when they get to the website.
  • Rage Clicks - This alerts us to things visitors think they should be able to click, but can't.
  • I wish it integrated with HubSpot so we could tie the information together.
  • I wish there were recommendations for funnels to better understand the visitor's journey.
  • I wish there was a way to archive Heat Maps and not have to delete them.
Smartlook is suited for companies of any size. I believe any company could find value in using Smartlook. It is a great tool for marketing teams to understand the visitor's journey and for the team that manages the website to understand changes that can be made to optimize the website.

We use Smartlook for several of our projects as a solution to record the behavior of users on our websites.
It's a really good solution for:
- Recording video of the visit.
- Building click maps and heatmaps of the pages.
- Building sales funnels based on events that were triggered on the website.
- Make custom filters for the videos based on events, so you can segment videos you really need to watch.
  • Recording video of the user's visits to a project website.
  • Creating a heat map and click map for selected page on website.
  • Creating custom events that allows to filter videos and watch only very important visits.
  • Building sales funnels and track conversion and drops on every step.
  • Providing analytics and custom reports to analyze visits.
  • A trial version is available.
  • No integration with Google Tag Manager to automatically implement custom events.
  • No examples for code integration.
  • No ready integration with CRM systems, you should build your own integration.
Smartlook is a good solution for a recording the behavior of users for small and mid-size web projects (also this service can record videos for the apps, but we haven't used this). It's really great for:
  • Tracking your user's behavior and record videos based on your custom events (add to cart, button clicks, add to wishlist, etc).
  • Analyzing on what elements your users click most.
  • For small projects, you have a free plan to record 1500 visits per month.
  • Getting a detailed report of device, platform, UTM tags of the selected visit to have analytics what devices your clients are using.

I use this app to see how my clients interact with our website
  • Easy to use
  • Easy to install
  • Friendly interface
  • Good tutorials
  • I think a good improvement would be a connection with Mautic or other marketing automation apps
  • I would like to integrate Smartlook with Google Tag Manager so you can track events and see them in the video
I would give it a 10, because it is a really good app, and helps you to improve your website and learn about your customer's behaviors. Also, I think the heat map helps you a lot in improving the design of your website. For me, it is a great tool that everyone in the marketing side of any business should know.

Smartlook is being used for testing purposes. I discovered it about 6 or 7 months ago, so we are new to it. It is being used to see the activity of visitors on our site.
  • I love how it captures video of what's being done by a visitor. It allows us to better design and layout a page.
  • It's really organized well and the heatmaps are very useful.
  • The Smartlook team always seem to be adding features. I see there are funnels now. This is great.
  • Sine the introduction of funnels, I am assuming Smartlook is getting into marketing. I think having some sort of marketing automation or at least integrations with other marketing automation software would be nice.
  • A longer period for the trail.
  • A white label version. This software is great and would be a nice offering to sell to clients.
There are competitors that have heatmaps, but not video recordings. Smartlook has both and more. I think it's great for newly designed websites. It can give you perspective on how well the design translate to user interactions.

I use Smartlook on my online store which is affiliated to my Blog. It has helped me to see the issues and difficulties that visitors had while visiting my online shop and hence enabled me to fix it
  • Ability to record visitors' journies from the landing page to the very time they leave my page
  • Records events and heat maps hence enabling you to know your most visited page on the store
  • It also made it easy for me to decipher what problems my store had and to fix it
  • I would prefer that they explain their terms more, I found it difficult to configure the events part
It's suitable for online businesses that sell goods, because you can see what your customers are clicking on and you are able to fix it. But if you are selling things on your blog, I do not see how it helps you, except if you want to see user interaction with your blog.

We primarily use Smartlook in the digital marketing department. Insights from Smartlook recordings, heatmaps, and funnels have been turned into actionable items from user experience improvements to customer service initiatives. We've made major improvements as a result of Smartlook's tools.
  • The heat map scrolling feature helps us understand how much information our users are seeing and where they are dropping off.
  • The user recordings have been instrumental in creating user experience roadmaps.
  • The funnels have been very helpful in identifying where prospects are dropping off before becoming leads.
  • It would be nice if IP to company identification was displayed on recording profiles.
  • Often times stylesheets don't render properly and make the navigation section look bad.
  • Navigation drop downs do not get displayed when users click.
It's great to determine how users are engaging with the site and where potential site shortcomings exist.
